Frequently Asked Question

Can I keep health insurance while on Federal Disability Retirement?

# Back to all FAQs

Yes, the Federal Disability Retirement benefit will allow you to continue any health and life insurance benefits that you already carry through your job.

However, you are still required to pay your portion of these benefits, just like you would under regular retirement.

If you do not meet the eligibility requirements to receive Health Benefits, then OPM has a waiver that you can submit that could possibly override the time requirements, but it is not guaranteed.

Also, if you did not carry insurance through your FERS Career and were on your spouses’ insurance the entire time then you will be eligible to apply for Health Benefits through OPM under your name.
