Frequently Asked Question

How many times can I appeal an OPM Federal Disability Retirement decision?

# Back to all FAQs

If you are denied for Federal Disability Retirement at the initial stage, then you have multiple opportunities to appeal the decision. First you can submit an appeal for reconsideration where your case will be assigned to a new medical specialist at the OPM, and you can submit additional supporting evidence at this time. If you are denied again at the reconsideration stage, then you have the option to submit another appeal and have your case taken to a judge at the Merit Systems Protection Board (MSPB).

If you find yourself in this situation, we know it can be confusing and scary. But don’t worry, you still have options and there’s still hope. We’re here to guide you through the process and take the heavy burden off your shoulders.
