The USPS has suffered dramatic financial losses in recent years, even after attempts to cut costs, and now says it could run out of money by the end of 2026.
From 2007 to 2024, the agency lost about $109 billion. That number has continued to climb in the last couple years.
So with billions in losses and an uncertain future, where does that leave USPS employees?
What that means for federal employees
As the agency works with advisors to try to avoid running out of money, a few possibilities could threaten workers.
Already, USPS cut 10,000 jobs through Voluntary Early Retirement Authority (VERA) which offered workers incentives to walk away.
More of the same is likely on the way, including RIFs, layoffs, and other involuntary cuts.
Bottom line – this means USPS workers face uncertainty about whether their job will be around this time next year.
The reality if you’re already struggling
This level of uncertainty is difficult for anyone. It’s especially hard for people whose medical conditions are already making it difficult to work.
Struggling to keep up with your day-to-day responsibilities? Juggling doctor visits? Trying to ration sick days? Feeling the toll of carrying symptoms all the time?
This kind of job insecurity at a time when you need extra support is a burden you shouldn’t have to bear.
One Way Out
- If you want to be sure that your medical coverage won’t run out – even if the USPS runs out of money,
- If you want to continue gaining years of service to count toward your pension while also stepping away from work to focus on your health,
- If you want the flexibility of continued monthly paychecks and the opportunity to work in a job that adjusts to your needs –
Federal Disability Retirement is worth serious thought.
It’s designed for injured and ill federal workers who are struggling to do their job. Disability Retirement is separate from your agency. It won’t disappear if your agency loses funding.
