Federal GSA Workers Dealing with RIF Offered Reinstatement – One Alternative

by | Sep 25, 2025

Last Updated November 10, 2025

After facing a Reduction In Force (RIF) in May of 2025, hundreds of GSA workers are being offered reinstatement.

Those offered reinstatement only have until the end of the day Friday, September 26th to accept. Reinstated workers will be expected to return to their post on Monday, October 6th.

For many, this reinstatement offer is welcome news. The combination of RIFs, layoffs, and buyout offers over the last several months has put federal workers in a difficult and often stressful situation. Having the opportunity to return to work may provide the peace of mind people have been looking for.

What if returning to work isn’t best for me?

But maybe over the last few months away from work, you’ve realized returning isn’t possible. Maybe being home has helped you realize that your medical conditions were getting in the way of you doing your job. If that sounds like you, and the prospect of returning to work seems impossible, we understand you’re in a difficult position.

If you want to avoid returning to the stress of working everyday with a medical condition, but you need to keep providing for you and your family, Disability Retirement may be a great option for you.

Federal Disability Retirement

Disability Retirement is designed for injured and ill federal employees who are finding it difficult to do all the essential duties of their job. Whether it’s because of a physical condition or a mental health challenge, this benefit offers federal workers the chance to step away from a job that no longer serves them so they can get the medical treatment they need without the worry about finances, insurance, and losing your retirement.

It offers four main benefits:

  1. Monthly paychecks to help you make ends meet
  2. The ability to keep working in the private sector on your own terms
  3. You keep earning years of creditable service until you switch to your normal retirement
  4. You get to hold on to your federal health and life insurance, so you don’t have to worry about getting the healthcare you need

One important note – you have exactly 1 year to apply for Disability Retirement after separation from your job, so don’t wait to get the process started.

If you know you can’t return to work, but you need that peace of mind, reach out today to schedule a free consultation. We’ll help you chart a clear path forward, so you don’t have to worry about returning to work while struggling with your health.
